Community Explores Swannanoa Greenway Opportunities

More Than 100 Community Members Gather to Explore Greenway Opportunities in Swannanoa

More than 100 people registered to attend a community event in March hosted by Thrive Asheville, bringing together residents, partners, and trail advocates to explore the potential of a future greenway in Swannanoa. The event was organized in collaboration with Connect Buncombe, Swannanoa Grassroots Alliance, and Friends and Neighbors of Swannanoa, highlighting the growing regional momentum behind safer, more connected outdoor spaces.

Representatives from Friends of Fonta Flora State Trail were proud to attend and support the conversation. As an organization dedicated to expanding trail connectivity across Western North Carolina, Fonta Flora recognizes the importance of partnerships and community-driven planning in building a stronger network of greenways and trails that benefit both residents and visitors.

The afternoon featured three engaging sessions focused on the future of Swannanoa’s landscape and how thoughtful greenway development can strengthen communities. Topics included understanding the Swannanoa River and improving safety, lessons learned from successful greenway projects, and planning strategies for creating a more connected and resilient community. The event concluded with a community networking session that allowed attendees to share ideas and build relationships.

For the Fonta Flora team, participating in events like this reinforces the shared vision of a region where trails and greenways connect communities, support local economies, and provide safe, accessible outdoor spaces for everyone. The strong turnout demonstrated that Swannanoa residents care deeply about their community—and about creating a greener, more connected future.
